SHORT STORIES
OUR NEW SECRETARY
In the office, the telephone rang and our new secretary, Miss Simpson, answered it. Mr Bright was speaking and he was looking for Mr Calder. Mr Bright wanted to sell his new typewriters and he rang up nearly every day, so he was really irritating. Miss Simpson informed her boss that Mr Bright wanted to speak to him, covering the phone with a hand, and asked Mr Calder what she had to say. So Mr Calder, that didn’t need any new typewriters, irritated replied to his secretary to say he wasn’t in the office. As a result, Miss Simpson said: “I’m afraid, you can’t speak to Mr Calder now, he says he isn’t in the office!”
TWO TRAMPS AND A DOG
Two tramps were walking a quiet road, and a sorry-looking dog was following them. The first tramp told the second, called Joe: “We’ve had a bad day. We got no money and we can’t buy any food now”. But Joe, more optimistic, said happily that they will find something. Suddenly, a car appeared in the distance. It was coming towards the two tramps, so they moved to one side. Instead the dog remained in the middle of the road, the driver tried to stop but he inevitably hit the dog, killing it. So the driver got out of his car and went towards the tramps. He was sorry for the poor dog and, thinking it belonged to the tramps, gave them five pounds. The tramps accepted the money and finally, when the driver drove away, one tramp asked the other: “Whose dog was it?”
