METAPHOR AND METONYMY
"Metaphor and Metonymy" is an extract taken from David Lodge's novel
"Nice work" written in 1988 . The novelist's aim is to
entertain the reader and at the same time to make explicit the different
function of metaphor and metonymy in comunication. So, to explain the metaphore
David L. appeals to the representation of a cigarettes' brand "Silk
Cut". In the poster that Vic Wilcox and Robyn Penrose whatch is
represented a shimmering silk with voluptuous curves and sensuous texture that
symbolized the female body, while the elliptical slit remainds a vagina. In
addition the novelist with the representation compares the desire regarding to
the cigarettes with the sensual and sadistic impulses to penetrate a female body: "Metaphor is
a figure of speech based on similarity, you substitute something like the thing
you mean for the thing itself ". On the other hand there is a metonymy:
"Metonymy is based on contiguity, you substitute some attribute or cause
or effect of the thing for the thing itself". As a consequence, David
Lodge provides the reader with an able "game of words" a valid
axplanation certain to a difference between metonymy and metaphore adopting a
concrete example.
