Eveline is the title of a short story of the tale's collection called Dubliners by James Joyce.
The title refers to the name of the protagonist.
Eveline is presented while she is sitting near the window that represents the frontier between the open space and the closed space. The space is creates by characters (dust on Eveline's nose). In the first part of the story there are some elements representing the closed space and the incapacity to react: dust on the curtains, the old harmonium and the old photo. The incapacity to react is also represent by state verbs (to watch, to sit).
The use of the simple past makes the reader understand she is remembering the past and it is a element of the protagonist's inactivity.

At the first time the narrator is omniscient: he describes Eveline's feelings.
Then he uses the interior monologue to create realism: reality is represented by characters' perception. He uses also the narrative technique of the "free direct speech", introduced by the exclamation "Home" at the beginning of the second paragraph. At the end of the story, the narrator is omniscient again: he shows Eveling's feelings.
