Up to  5A - Dubliners and The DeadUp to task document list

The extract named The Dead  is set in Gabriel’s and Gretta’s hotel room.

Gabriel is thinking about the conversation with his wife Gretta about her first lover who is dead, so Gabriel is thinking about existence’s concepts like life and the death. In the scene we can notice that Gabriel is thinking about lots people’s death and he finds some similarities between people who live and people who are dead.

The author uses words like: darkness, shades, dead, falling to underline the concept of the death. So in this part of the extract we can find the epiphany of Gabriel, that is a psychological condition.

At the end of the text there is the metaphor of snow. What is it? It’s snowing and white and beautiful snow follows very slow and it is in contrast with Gabriel’s soul that is empty of tears and thoughts. In addition when there is snow there is cold too and cold give us immobility’s sensation, but it’s a general immobility’s sensation because it’s snowing in all over Ireland. So all Dubliners are paralyzed and Gabriel too, because he doesn’t accept the concept of death but he is conscious that he is dead.

All these thoughts and tears are contained in a monologue.
