Up to  5B - Nice WorkUp to task document list

The extract is taken from David’s Lodge Nice Work. It belongs to the 2nd chapter and displays all the main features of postmodernism. The novelists adopts a 3rd person intrusive omniscient narrator to provide the reader with the parody of the traditional Victorian novel ( let us leave). Right from the start the narrator exploits a binary opposition technique to introduce the character also resorting to a style of narration that offers the narrators comments and judgments on the character. In addition the writer is skilled at keeping the attention of the reader, creating expectations so that he is eager to go on reading.  The two protagonists in Nice Work are Robyn Penrose and Vic Vilcox. Robyn is a feminist who works at the university of Rummidge as a temporary teacher specialized in courses on the industrial novel and women’s writing and Vic is a managing director. The two would probably never have met if it had not been for the industry year shadow scheme. When they meet, it is dislike at first sight. First, all their prejudices are confirmed but gradually they start to appreciate each other. Vic even falls in love with her and when they are on a business trip in Frankfurt they spend the night together. Vic expresses his love  for Robyn and she shuns him from that moment on.
