THE DEAD ANALYSIS

“The Dead “  is the most important short story contained in “Dubliners” written by James Joyce. It talks about the annual dance and party organized by the Morgan sisters. Their housemaid has to greet all the guests. At the arrival of Gabriel Conroy, Julia and Kate’ s nephew and his wife Gretta, the housemaid greet the young man who talks with her about her own lovers. But she replies in an outstanding way. So Gabriel is really astonished about it and her answer makes him anxious all the night. Joyce depicts Gabriel as a controverse character .He is intolerant towards people who are not agree with him like Miss Ivors. He is really disturbed when she unpolitely tells him to be a West Britain and he answered in an aggressive and  rude way. He is an unreliable character. It is really remarkable the dinner speech, too. During it Gabriel thanks  Julia, Kate and  Mary for their great hospitality. He also underlines that people should be more interested in present and livings than dead and the past . Through  these words Joyce wants to focus the attention of the reader on the protagonist who has a well defined view of life which in not able to follow . The story finishes with the image of the protagonist who is thinking about Gretta’ s  dead  boyfriend : Michael  Furey. Gabriel is really jealous of him because  he was able to love her with a greater passion than him.
