Pag. 12 – 13 (summary)

Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem. It was written in the 8th century by a Christian Author. It was an oral text, transmitted by singers as a form of entertainment.

It deals about Beowulf and his deeds: the hero has to fight against several monsters who terrorize people. Its message refers to life as a continue struggle between good and evil. The story takes place in Denmark and Sweden and it deals with both legend and historical events. The poem tells about the Anglo-Saxon military society and important values, such as loyalty, courage, strength.

Pag. 17 (summary)

“Beowulf and Grendel” is a 2005 movie by S. Gunarsson. As suggested by the title, it only deals about Beowulf’s arrival in Denmark and his fight against Grendel. The movie isn’t completely close to the poem, because:

·           there are “new” characters;

·           Grendel is a creature of flesh and blood (he hasn’t mythical powers);

·           Grendel kills people because he is driven by revenge (the king murdered his father).

“Beowulf” is a 2007 movie by R. Zemeckis. It starts with an immediate reference to King Hrothgar. Grendel makes his entrance in the story and kills several people. Beowulf comes from his homeland to defeat Grendel. Then he fights against two other monsters. He dies and he is then given a Norse funeral. This movie is closer to the poem than the other one. However, there are still some changes about characters.
