Textuality » 3A Interacting
The text is an extract from the Old English poem Beowulf. The first section is interesting to bring to surface the narrative strategy adopted by the narrator to make the reader understand Grendel0s strength.
At line 739 there is a repetition of the sound "s", "struck, suddenly and started in", that underline Grendel's force.
At line 750 the expression "handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth" and "he could not escape" highlights Grendel's superhuman force.
In the second section Beowulf's warriors defend their lord's life, fighting against Grendel.
In the section the reader can understand they are not able to kill the monster and at line 799 the word "struggle" underlines that.
Section third is extremely interesting to bring to surface the narrative strategy adopted by the narrator to make the reader understand Grendel's pain, highlighted from line 814 to line 817.
Grendel is described like a monster, and not like a real creature.
Indeed at line 814 there is the word "monster". At line 812 there is the word "demon" and last but not least at line 749 there is the expression "the captain of evil".
At line 801 the reader can understand Grendel has got a superhuman force, that "no blacksmith's art could ever damage their demon opponent".
Beowulf is the hero, who fight against Grendel and is victorious.
The language is very strong; the narrator uses words like blood, gorged, struck, tremendous, slit etc..
The language used by Anglo-Saxon civilization..
A contemponeary narrator wouldn't use this language to describe a fight.
In the whole text there is the use of alitteration.
At line 798-799 there is a repetition of sound "s", like at line 739.
