Beowulf is the oldest surviving Anglo-Saxon epic poem. It tells of legendary people, events and describes a warrior society. Warrior society is based on relationships between the leader and his warriors. The poem is written by  Christian author from the 8^th to the 11^th century. The actions take place in Scandinavia where warrior tribes fought against one other. Beowulf is the hero and he has superhuman powers. He fights against three monsters: Grendel, who is surrounded by darkness, Grendel's mother, whose poisoned blood dissolves any sword used against her, and the Serpentine Dragon.
The themes are courage, endurance, generosity and loyalty.
