Beowulf is the oldest surviving Anglo-Saxon epic poem. It tells of legendary people, events and describes a warrior society. Warrior society is based on relationships between the leader and his warriors. The poem is written by  Christian author from the 8th to the 11th century. The actions take place in Scandinavia where warrior tribes fought against one other. Beowulf is the hero and he has superhuman powers. He fights against three monsters: Grendel, who is surrounded by darkness, Grendel's mother, whose poisoned blood dissolves any sword used against her, and the Serpentine Dragon.
The themes are courage, endurance, generosity and loyalty.
