The second part of the first section is semantically interesting. Indeed the narrator use some enjambments to accelerate the narrative rhythm. The strategy adopted by the narrator also suggests Grendel's quick motions and his greedy attitude. At line 5 the text focuses  on the setting where Grendel moves when he prepare his attack. The setting also tells the reader the danger represented by Grendel and underlines his monstrous condition: wherever he moves he is surrounded by darkness. The darkness highlighted at line 5 is opposed to the expressions in the next two lines "shone" and "fortified gold". It is worth noticing  that the expression referred to the darkness refers to Grendel, while the words which recall the idea of brightness refer to the kingdom, which is full of life. So there is another antithesis, the idea of death conveyed by the monster who is always surrounded by darkness versus the idea of brightness and life conveyed by the sheer keep. The cleverness of the narrator is notable at line 6-7, where he conveys Grendel's point of view of the high hall, indeed the world gold, which displays the preciosity of something  , let the listener understand that the hall appears to Grendel as a really rich and precious place. At line 6, the alliterative sound of the "s"  ties two expressions which may recall the idea of brightness and underline the importance of the sheer keep. In addition, the two final expressions "sheer keep" are monosyllabic words and presents a long sound conveyed by the repetition of the vocal "e". This long sound and the sound "sh" make the line longer and slows the narrative rhytm. At line 7 the narrator uses an inversion to put "the first time" into a better focus. So this choice emphasize the dangerous condition of the predator and the fear he creates .
