Chapter 1 - The wrong crib
In this chapter Winterson provides to give a piece of information about her life and in particular about her emotions. In fact, this book isn't an autobiographical book but it is a memoir. She develops some themes such as her negative relationship with her mother and the reason why she was adopted. Besides she talks about her birth mother. The main characters of this chapter are the protagonist, Jeanette Winterson, and her adoptive mother, Mrs Winterson. The function of this chapter is to introduce the main themes of the book and to create curiosity in the reader. The most important information are that she was adopted by Pentecostal family and that the adoption made Winterson's life difficult a lot. Concerning the narrative technique, the narration is in first person.
Chapter 2 - My advice to anybody is: get born
In this chapter the narrator talks about Manchester, the place where she was born. In addition to this she develops themes such as the Indusrial Revolution and Capitalism. Besides she speaks about her birth mother and she provides to give a detailed description of her adoptive parents. The main characters of this chapter are the protagonist, Jeanette Winterson, and her adoptive mother, Mrs Winterson. The function of this chapter is to create in the reader's mind a detailed context of all the things about her life. The most important information are the thought of Jeanette about Manchester, a city of contradiction (it provocates at the same time admire and appall) and Winterson's education based on religion and severity. The narration is in first person as in the first chapter.
