Twitter and dramatic monologue
All the texts I have analyzed are critical reviews ( argumentative texts) about the book “TWEET di un discorso amoroso” by R. Cotroneo. All of them talk about the new book: an essay, a narrative, a private diary that tries to find new and more authentic feelings through the clarity of writing. The book is about the new life of people on social networks, where a person confides his thoughts, his reflections, sharing them with friends. Considering the plot, the book hasn’t got one: it is a series of associations of thoughts, like a stream of consciousness, organized into 76 tweets (or status), short and fast to read, that represent fragments of thoughts. “read the book is like sit down and look to a man who speaks alone” a man that represent us. He speaks about himself as sometimes everyone would like to do but has no time, is tired, has no desire to do and so he speaks for everyone.
Tweet (definition) - A tweet is an online posting, or "micro-blog" created by a Twitter user. The purpose of each tweet is to answer the question, "What are you doing?" However, tweets can contain any information you want to post, such as your plans for the weekend, your thoughts about a TV show, or even notes from a lecture. You can publish a tweet using a computer or a mobile phone. Once published, the tweet will appear on the Twitter home pages of all the users that are following you. Likewise, your Twitter home page will display the most recent tweets of the users that you are following
The world of the social networks is constructed by quotations, simple emotions that come out in very short sentences: it lies between reality and fiction, between interior time and real time. It is very different from the dramatic monologue of the end of nineteenth century, not considering the contents, but in structure. Differently from the tweet , in the dramatic monologue concepts are expressed in a lot of lines and stanzas. In addition, the indivdual, the poet, has been replaced by anyone. He wrote to say what was in its soul, all his inner emotion and his word comes out from a study, a comprehension of all the traditional literature from its origins. He quotes, he knows exactly what the quotation means. On the social network, instead, you find quotation taken from philosopher, writers, but does the people know what they means. Another significant difference: the quotation of the poets belongs, for example, speaking about Eliot, to Wagner, to the Holy Bible, to the traditional poets. Now, the quotation are taken from movies, popular songs, contemporary books.
