The line 43 presents the figure of a clairvoyante, whose name is Sosostris. The nameappeals to a character of  Aldous Huxley’s Crome Yellow, which satirizes writers of that generation.

The reader understands why T.S. Eliot chooses the figure: A. Huxley’s Madame Sosostris has an ambiguous sexual identity, as T.S. Eliot’s descripition of Tiresia “old man with wrinkled dugs” and in the epigraph T.S. Eliot uses the figure of Sybillam Cumana; both have the capacity to see the future. The future they see is a “Waste Land”, which T.S. Eliot denounces and also the tarots card has lost their role, indeed in the past they were a source of knowledge and certainty. Sybillam Cumana’s myth was told during Trimalchione’s dinner (SatyriconPetronio) by himself, the ex-slave is the archetype of all enriched slaves of the II century d.C., their figures represents the lowest part of society, without any culture and life meaning, and according to T.S. Eliot the people of modern society. As the consequence the reader understands why T.S. Eliot chooses to put the epigraph at the beginning: it was a key of reading the poem.

The tarot cards recall to the myth of San Graal and BelladonnaThe Lady of the Rocks, The lady of situations…the man with three staves, and here the Wheel.. are symbolic figures of the myth. In particular there is a card that T.S. Eliot does not find: The Hanged Man. It represents the sacrificial victim (also he has to complete several trials) to make nature generate new life: as in Catholic religion, where Jesus has to die to be born again himself and people, The Hanged Man has to sacrifice. The Hanged Man is unfertile Fisher King, but who cannot give any life. He represents waterand now you has to Fear death by water(line 55). Jesus is an hero, he makes trials and he dies at the end and as a consequence he completes his task, differently from Fisher King, who represents modern human being, who live in a waste land without any values and hope of spiritual regeneration.
