Writing a letter
Object: Provide a guide to follow in order to write a letter
Step 1: Place and date
Write the place you are writing from and the date in the upper right corner of the paper.
Step 2: Decide the addressee
It is important to know who you are writing to (a friend, a boss, an important person,) in order to choose the right register (formal, familiar,).
Step 3: Epistolary formula
Start your letter with the common epistolary formula. Obviously you will keep in mind the addressee.
Examples
• If you are writing to a friend you can start with dear, sweet,
• If you are looking for a job and you are writing to a manager, a boss, you will start with Ms./Mrs./Mr./Dear Sir.
Step 4: Introduction
As well as the epistolary formula the introduction depends on the addressee.
Examples
• If you are writing to someone you know you will start with: how are you? It has been a long time since we haven't seen each other, how are things going?
• If you are writing a letter in order to get a job you will present yourself: My name is Eleonora Rabino, I am 18 years old,…
Step 5: Write the "body" of your letter
If you are writing a letter you must have a scope: explain it in the central part.
DO NOT FORGET: Pay attention to the register you use! Keep always in mind your addressee
Step 6: Conclusion
You underline the most important points in your letter, the ones that you want to make as clear as possible.
Step 7: Goodbyes
In the end you will write a goodbye.
• If you are writing to someone you haven't seen for a long time you can say I hope to see you soon, have a wonderful day.
• If you are writing to a friend or a relative you can say love you, big hugs.
• If you are writing to someone you don't know you can say thank you for the attention, thank you for your time, best wishes.
Step 8: Name
Do not forget to write your name (and last name)
Step 9: Post Scriptum
If there is something that you forgot to write, something that is really important or something that you just want to tell to your addressee but it has nothing to do with the letter you can add a P.S.
