Odysseus delt with suitors at itaca, he must set off again to face a "gentle
death"coming from sea. From this image Tennyson derived the picture of a man
used to danger and excitement and who finds a quiet life extremely boring.
Dante puts Ulysses in Hell because he wanted to challenge Gods. Tennyson's
version is closer to Homer's, because they both think the character is
admirable while Dante thinks he is wicked. The speaker is singular character
different from the poet; there's a presence of different points of view through
a drammatic language based on the use of pronouns, verbs, and expressions
referring to a non-speaking listener.
