In the essay the attention of the reader is focused on the approach to poetry. The speaking voice says that it is necessary to start a relationship with texts. The approach to poetry isn’t so simple because it implies a particular study about words, language, rhythm and images that the poet uses. Besides in the essay, the speaking voice established a comparison between television and the reading of a book. The main difference is the following: reading implies thinking. Another important consideration of the speaking voice is that we don’t really read a text if we don’t understand its meaning.  It is a simple procedure: when the reader’s mind isn’t able to comprehend what he/she is reading, the only solution is to stop the reading. Besides the speaking voice talks about the importance of reading: it is a great way of knowledge, and it gives some opportunities to understand the complexity of the world. In fact literature in the 20th century developed itself as a way of giving answers to people’s doubts. The speaking voice affirms that sometimes the use of mind isn’t sufficient to comprehend reality: he advises the reader to use her/his imagination. The function of imagination is essential because it permits to discover new ways of expression, new forms of being, differently from the one discovered through the work of the mind.

In particular the importance of poetry and imagination comes into surface in Tennyson’s dramatic monologue. It is a kind of poetry in which the main character, Ulysses, presents his considerations and thoughts to the reader. In the monologue, Tennyson uses the imagination to communicate a message. In fact Ulysses isn’t a real person, he is a mythological character. Tennyson presents Ulysses as an old man. His aim is to discover every part of the world with the mariners, his companies of travel. The reader can notice the importance of imagination in Tennyson’s work: it seems as if imagination and reality are strictly linked one to the other.
