Comprehension
1. They are at the refectory of the orphanage and they are eating.
2. After they have finished eating, the children polish the bowls with their spoons "till they shone again", and they still feel hungry( "as if they could have devoured the very bricks of which it was composed").
3. Well, they decide they will go to the master after supper that evening in order to ask for more food. To this aim, after finishing his supper meal, Oliver Twist rises from the table, advances to the master and shouts: "Please, sir, I want some more".
4. So, the master quickly becomes pale and feels astonished; the beadle, Mr. Bumble, turns very excited and makes Mr Limbkins ironically remind about Oliver's request; the reaction of the board, represented by Mr. Limbkins, consists in a sense of insult for Oliver's reaction.
Interpretation
1. Well, after reading the story I feel surprised, with particular reference to Oliver Twist's courage to challenge the orphanage master and the board too.
2. Taking into consideration the main features of Charles Dickens' style, you can notice the use of contrasts, such as "The master was a fat, healthy man; but he turned very pale" and "festive composition". What's more, you come across the use of hyperboles like "as if they could have devoured the very bricks of which it was composed" and "he was afraid he might some night happen to eat the boy we slept next to him" and the one of repetitions, such as "that boy will be hung" and "for more".
3.The author sympathizes with the boys: in a way, he glorifies the boy's will to rebel against the master.
4.Dickens chooses a third person omniscient narrator.
5. The third person omniscient narrator is characterized by the following features: he knows all about his characters and their external and inner lives; he describes the events from a high perspective; he makes his characters move like puppeteer with his puppets.
6. In truth, Dickens' serious aim in telling this episode consists of portraying the poorness among English society in 19th century and the terrible conditions the high number of its orphans was condemned to bear without chances to react.
