Summary of the three texts about Capitalism

1. Extract from www.economist.com

In this text we are given the definitions of “capitalism” by many important persons, like Karl Marx, Winston Churchill and Schumpeter

For example Karl Marx defines the capitalism as something that has got the ability to add value to itself. Churchill instead describes it as a “healthy horse carrying a sturdy wagon”.

2. Extract from “The Guardian”: “A crisis of capitalism”

The case of our homeland, Italy, is taken under analysis in this text. The journalist clearly mocks Berlusconi, meaning that our ex-prime minister did not care as much for the economical situation in Italy, rather than his own pleasures.

The reporter then begins to analyze the roots of our crisis by focussing on a wider plane: the European economy itself. The Germany takes profits of the southern European’s deficits, while imposing austerity budgets.

The crisis in Italian economy is due to Germany’s mercantilism, but before all of that the economy emergency was due to some markets that saw how European leaders couldn’t manage its States’ deficits and preferred to take profit on it instead of helping out.

To this what succeeded was the lack of labour, which kneeled Italy more than anything else.

3. Extract from “RavennaeDintorni” about Zingales.

This text reviews a meeting with Zingales, world-famed economist, at Ravenna.

He talks about how Italy can win the crisis by using the method of the merit: it means that those who have some merits can proceed in their career or have a job. In other words, you gain by your merits. He’s also positive about a reprise of Italy’s economy, as he says that it is time, now, for a major change, and we all can do it, and he will also help by answering to whoever Italian politician may ask him his help.
