Textuality » 4A Interacting
The fifth scene could be divided in three parts: the first one, in which Macbeth refers his wife about what happened, then a second part contains lady’s reflections about Macbeth’s nature. In the end there’s lady took of position and her decision to be the one who will help Macbeth to become king.
In the first part the way the letter is written reminds the reader about a sort of kindness and humility. While reading, you can find Scottish words (HAIL, for example) and this is very common in Shakespearian’s works which draw inspiration from all sorts of traditions and classicisms. In the middle of the letter there’s an affirmative sentence written in an interrogative way. This wants to highlight that MacBeth found a good idea writing her wife the letter, with the inversion of the words that focuses the attention on THIS ( the fact) and I (Macbeth)
While the woman talks about Macbeth is full of conditional forms that makes the reader perceive the weakness of the lord and his desire to gain power following the right way. There is an interesting thing that lady says which is another important shadow of lord Macbeth, he is full of “ the milk of human kindness” , milk is something that babies drink: it would make the reader aware of Macbeth innocence and naivety, as a child.
In the last part you can find imperative forms that represent the took of position of lady Macbeth. There’s a strong imagine suggested in this part: all the evil spirits repressed in Lady Macbeth finally have the chance to go out and influence someone else to get a concrete objective. This is very important to understand a bit of Lady Macbeth nature because It represents her big ambition and the frustration of not have become someone important ( in those time women couldn’t reach relevant positions)
In the end, you can realize that Lady Macbeth will use her puppet husband to have what she have always desired: power.
