Macbeth is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is placed in Scotland and there are three main places where the story takes place: in the greenwood, in Macbeth's castle and in the king's of Scotland palace.
Macbeth is a lord, a Scottish thane loyal to king Duncan and to Scotland. The play opens with Macbeth and his friend Banquo, returning from the victory against the rebels, when they meet three witches. The witches tell Macbeth he will be the new thane of Cawdor and the future king of Scotland; furthermore they prophesize that Banquo will be less lucky that Macbeth, but he will be greater because his children will be king of Scotland.
The two come closer to the camp, when they are be welcomed with a messenger from King Duncan who announces that Macbeth has been made the new Thane of Cawdor. Immediately Macbeth considers the witches' prophecy and decides to write a letter to his wife to inform her about what had happened to him.
Lady Macbeth is very sure of her husband's future but she thinks he is too kind and noble. She would kill the current king that same night, in her castle.
King Duncan has arrived at Macbeth's castle and at night Macbeth, after a vision of a dagger, feels braver and kills the king. He accuse the servants of have murdered the king even killing them. Malcolm and Donalbain, the king's sons, decide to escape secretly out of the castle.
Macbeth is elected King of Scotland, but he starts to feel worried about Banquo and his son, who will be king of Scotland. He decides, with his wife, to kill them too but the boy escapes the murderers. At a celebratory banquet Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo in an empty chair and concerns the guests with his strange behaviour. Lady Macbeth tries to calm him in vane and she is forced to send away everyone.
Macbeth decides to meet again the three witches to know something else about his future. They prophesize him that he must be afraid of Macduff, no man or woman born can harm him and he will only be defeated when Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. Knew that Macduff has escaped to England, Macbeth orders the murder of Macduff's wife and children.
While Macbeth was waiting for the enemy's attack, Lady Macbeth is going to be mad, unable to wash the blood from her hands. Macbeth feels safe in his castle at Dunsinane until he discovers that Birnam Wood is moving towards him. The situation is that Malcolm's army is carrying branches from the forest for their assault on the castle. Furthermore Macduff was cut from his mother's dead body, so he kills Macbeth with his sword. He carries his head to Malcolm, who will soon be crowned king of Scotland.
