In Macbeth, a famous tragedy by Shakespeare, the protagonist (Macbeth) wrote a letter to his Lady to explain what happened. The reader knows already what happened, but reading the letter, you understand the different personality of Macbeth and his Lady.
The letter is organized into parts: the first one deals with the meeting with two witches, who predicted Macbeth’s future. They said he would become a very powerful man, on a first moment Thane (Lord) of Cawdor, and later on King of Scotland.
Macbeth is shown to be afraid about this prediction, “He burned in desire to question them further, but the witches disappeared” (3rd line). The reaction puts in evidence the fear of the unknown during that period. The witches were considered guilty of everything men can’t explain. Macbeth was confused and decided to write a letter to his Lady to ask for help advice.
In the second part of the letter, the reader can understand the considerations of the Lady. She makes a description of her husband and decided what he should do. Macbeth was honest, loyal and ambitious, but not cruel enough. He didn’t want kill king Duncan to become himself king, but the Lady pushed him to take action.
The reader can understand the strong personality of the Lady. She influenced Macbeth’s destiny a lot, she imposed him her point of view. You can see her superiority considering the different use of language: “my dearest partner of greatness” against “thou” (you) used by the Lady. It was a strange behavior for that period, where women couldn’t take any decision and had a marginal role in the society. And so, the reader can explain the word “Lady”, used to call Macbeth’s wife, as a woman with a strong personality in a world where only men were recognized the power.
