The first part of the extract is used by Willam Shakespeare to describe Macbeth's behavior. This part is a letter from Macbeth to his wife Lady Macbeth. The letter is about the meeting of Macbeth with the three witches. The witches made a prophecy about Macbeth's future. They said he would become thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland. W. Shakespeare used medieval themes like the supernatural in a Renaissance spirit. The intelligent reader can understand Macbeth wants to believe in the witches' prophecy because it is a promise of power, but he does not know what to do(“perfect report” “mortal knowledge”). This insicure underlines his weakness and his need to receive the approval from his wife, which is the reason why he wrote the lette. The use of “you” as subject and the use of the possesive “your” underline the central position of Lady Macbeth in his life and also in the tragedy(“my dearest partner of greatness”). From the last lines of the letter the intelligent reader understands Macbeth is extremely insicure, he does not know how to act in the best way , so he needs Lady Macbeth's advice. The concepts introduce the importance of lady Macbeth in the tragedy.

The second part of the extract is used by W. Shakespeare to describe Lady Macbeth's ambitions and thoughts about Macbeth. The prophecy concerned also Lady Macbeth because if it comes true she will be the Qeen of Scotland. Lady Macbeth is attracted by power but she is afraid of Macbeth's behavior. She knows her husband well , she knows he is too kind to take an important decision. So Lady Macbeth plans to kill the King of Scotland (to comitt treason). To do this Lady Macbeth needs to make her husband more determinated and stonger because her hambitions are more important than Macbeth's will. From these lines the intelligent reader can understand Lady Macbeth is determined , intelligent, straight-forward and also a cruel person. As she read the letter she knew what to do and she considered her husband's famble. Lady Macbeth also wants to believe in the prophecy that is a promise of power but differently from Macbeth she start to plann possible actions to take.

w. Shakespeare makes a comparaison between two different character s : Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. With this comparaison Shakespeare refers to the switch of the focus of people from God to the human beeing. The two characters are attracted by the prophecy, something that goes beyond “mortal knowledge”, because it concerns their power. So one common thing between the different characters is the interest for power, and he describes two different ways to react based on moral qualities.
