Manchester by Tocqueville

This extract comes from a work named “ Journeys to England and Ireland” and took place in 1835. A structure focus on right from the start with the description of place. Mainly from geographical point of view. Right in a way as able to see in metaphorical appealing to sight. The essayist speaks about 3 canals made by men. There is a contraxt between artificial canals against natural landscape. The land of Manchester is full of water and humid. Tocqueville uses anthropological geography for discuss the man transforming founds. First of all there is a presentation of Manchester, but immediately avert the intelligent reader that the men transform this place. The power of men is individual and change the nature, individual against society, working-class versus capitalist. Man made things. The language is apparently simple, negative impressions about Manchester. Manchester is the celebration of power and individual. The self-made men generated in Manchester. The thesis:  the expanse of society is that Manchester celebrate the triumph of individual against society triumph. Another thesis is comnadation of disregarding the community, Tocqueville command the government not interments ( essay way). The central attraction is industry. No regarding principle, everything is born random ( building of house ). The dwells are poor. Division of lands, man secondary importance, all is industrialation, men prefer industry not community. City becomes humanize woman. He anthropomorphizes the lands.  There is not idea of something balance. Tocqueville is prepare the argumentations. Slave of needs means it depends from something. The idea of well being is not necessarily dependent by this richness. Tocqueville doesn’t like this ( conclusion). Tocqueville deals of the lost of spontaneity and triumph of negative. Use of language appeals to sense ( smell.. hearing). There is a criticism of attitudes not spontaneous life. Medieval town with eighteenth century wonderful.  To arrive in Manchester not open ways but closed ways. ( smells putrid). Manchester seems suitable for is a refuge from death. When in a society is a individual is refer to jealously, when is a society solidarity. Tocqueville uses metaphors, refuge of poverty, deals about industry places, people lives in darkness and perpetual, in this case eternal damnation.
