MANCHESTER IN J. WINTERSON AND IN A. TOCQUEVILLE
In the second chapter of the novel , J. Winterson wants to show the city of Manchester as a contradictory city , both for its location and for its condition of life. The autharess , however , says that Manchester is a beautiful place to be born , she gives a positive opinion about it. Then she describes the city and its qwn history , stressing its bleakness caused by dirt , smoke and by the deafening noise. Finally he shows the miserable condition of people caused by the rise of prices and by the exploitation in the factories.
Tocqueville described Manchester at the beginning from a geographic point of view and then he talks about the coditions of the city, portraying it as a city living in dirt and misery a city in a great decline. Both writers try to attract the reader's attention. The difference between the two texts is that J. Winterson talks about his own experience and his own childhood r emembering the difficult conditions of the family.
