MANCHESTER IN A.TOCQUEVILLE AND COKETOWN IN C. DICKENS
Tocqueville and Dickens are really interested to the consequences of the Industrial Revolution on the cities of Manchester and Coketown and on the population. Manchester is described geographically by Tocqueville in order to introduce the topic..Then the writer talks about the conditions of the city. Coketown is described by Dickens in a different way, it is described as a fictional city. Talking about the attitude it can be said that Tocqueville is more detached than Dickens .He has got a negative opinion about individualism and industrialization because every man was selfish, really interested in himself, so there wasn't a balance within the city. The power of individualism against the society was represented in the city of Manchester. The concept of man was less important than the concept of industry. Coketown is the city of imagination in "Hard Times" .Dickens talks about the coke because it is the symbol of the Industrial Revolution. The story is narrated by the third personal intruder narrrator and the author uses a lot of symbols like the black that represents darkness and hell. The colour red means suffering, pains, blood. An idea of progress is given by the red bricks of Coketown. Moreover the author talks about impaved roads, red sea caused by the dye that went into the sea and smoke noises from the shriek of steam from boilers.
