Learning Paths » 5A Interacting
The third and the fourth chapters are strictly connected to the second one.
Right from the title the intelligent reader understand the importance of books in Jeanette Winterson’s life. Her adolescence was very influenced by books, in particular the first book she read was the Bible, and in the third chapter she focused the reader’s attention on the meaning of the Bible reading during her youth.
The title The Beginning Was The Word suggests to the reader the content of the third chapter, The Word is The God’s Word. So Jeanette Winterson made the reader understand the Bible was the consequences of her actions and choices, that is The Beginning and the reading of other books take her to be who is now. Indeed the novelist said she read in hiding the parts Mrs Winterson forbade her to read.
The fourth chapter The Trouble With A Book makes the reader understand Mrs Winterson didn’t allow to Jeanette to read what she wanted. Indeed the is an admonition, an admonishment like the title of the second chapter. The titles are oxymoronic advices. My Advice To Anybody Is: Get Born is an invitation Jeanette suggested to everyone. Her advice is to wake up, to know, to look at reality and so to understand in what position you want to be, what you want to represent in your society.
Jeanette “found” herself, she understood who she want to be and she offered the possibility to reflect with her memoir. So The Trouble With A Book suggests the books take problems, but Jeanette wanted to intrigue the reader. Books make people able to reflect and they are dangerous for the society and for government who try to create people bounded to mass, which assures there isn’t any opposition to their decisions.
In conclusion the second, the third and the fourth chapter bring the same theme. The theme is the continuous invitation to develop in your own way, everyone has a way to follow. The way will take to build up your individuality, different from each other one. This is the core message of the novel.
