First of all we have to underline that the text we are going to analyze is taken from a spoken lesson, so the language won't be the one of a regular argumentative text. It is full of exhortations and all other devices typical of the spoken language, but the structure is the same. Indeed the language used is very informal. There are also a lot of repetitions to make remember easily what the speakers has said and conjunctions belonging the informal style.
It contains a very brief introduction who's aim is only to make people aware of what they going to listen and watch. The speaker caught the listeners attention by explaining them what his job is and that he's going to do something he have never done before. Immediately he announces the aim of the whole video. Each statement is followed by a justification that has the task to justify the sentence before.
Hans uses a progressive structure, making a clearly defined starting point. He uses a temporal line starting from 1810 to 2009 to describe the last 200 years. So he shows us how the project will be played. The speaker explains the situation with a Cartesian diagram, where the vertical axis represents the health and the horizontal axis represents the wealth. Hans establishes a connection between the two facts. Then inside that line he puts continents, belonging to Asia, Africa, America and finally Europe. The speaker wants keep the reader attention by making him thinking about what he is looking at (conveyed by the words "wasn't it?"). He develops his argumentation with temporal order, starting the discussion with words meant for effect ("and now, I start the word") to draw the reader attention. The speaker analyzes each period: the start of the eighteenth century, the industrial revolution, the impact of the First World War, the Great Depression, the 1948s, the 1970s and the situation of today. In each of them he describes the situations of the different countries, starting to review the countries from West to East. In this part of the text he makes a lot of examples and comparisons between the different countries to justify his statements and to show us what has happened in the last years. While he was speaking about the developing of the World, he announced he was born 1948 because he wants to demonstrate us that he had lived in that time. In the central body of the text there is the repetition of the word "now" that wants underline the each change. There are also a lot of adverbs and conjunctions to make interesting the discussion. So Hans tries to catch the reader's attention to make him understand what is happening.
In the end, the speaker draws conclusion describing the situation of the countries from East to West. He shows us a "remarkable progress" and he underlines again his argumentation. He sums up the situation and makes a prediction about the future that all the countries will reach the healthy and wealthy corner.
