Textuality » 4A Interacting
Right from the start the speaker introduces the topic of the essay: "English is the richest language to write poetry". In the second sentence we can understand that the speaker agrees with the statement. It is underpinned by the subject "I". Then the writer clarifies his thesis with an explanation in order to do not create misunderstandings. He also provides examples to make the reader understand. The speaker proceeds his talk with clarification about the thesis, justifying the statement with other information. He says that "English language is the most remarkable medium for the poet to play with. He also underlines that "English has the largest vocabulary". The writer agrees again with it because the sentence starts with the subject "I". After that the speaker continues with an argumentation. Elliot starts this argumentation with the conjunction "but" to draw listener's attention about what he is saying. The speaker announces that English language is various because it is made up of several elements. The expression "in my opinion" underlines that the writer agrees with this argumentation. He provides historical and chronological information in order to make the listener believe in what he is saying. Indeed he introduces secondary argumentations with different conjunctions that express a sequence: first, after this, then, after this, there. Thus, the speaker lists elements to support his thesis: the Germanic foundation, the Scandinavian element (with the Danish conquest), the Norman French element, the Norman influences, the Latin and the Celtic element. They are given in chronological order, except for the Celtic element because Elliot wants to give it a relevant importance. The pronouns "you" and "we", in the sentence where the writer speaks about the Germanic influence, create a relationship between the speaker and the listeners, that is between the English people and the German one.
