THE ECONOMIST'S ARTICLE

“THE OTHER SHOE”

I was surfing the Economist's website, an English-language weekly news and international affairs publication owned by The Economist Newspaper Ltd, when an article drew my attention. The article's title was “The other shoe”, I didn't know its meaning and so I read the subtitle: “Same-sex marriage in Utah”. After I have read the subtitle, I understood that the article was about marriages between homosexuals, but I still could not understand the article's effective content.

The journalist who wrote the article was succeeded in his intent: the article made me curious and so I have read it.

When you consider the article's structure, you notice that at the beginning there's a picture which illustrates a wedding between a man and a woman; then you may notice that are used some quotations about some people involved into the contention.

After I have read the article, I realized that it regarded the contention on same-sex marriage: people favourable, those who oppose, and the opinions of people outside the contention.

Moreover, I understand that the article is not only addressed to same-sex couples, but also to Utah's inhabitants in general and to informed people, because it regards a fundamental constitutional technicality for USA.

As regard as language, the lexicon used is quite simple for people who speak English well and so it is available for most of the audience.

Finally, I understood that the article is about same-sex marriage in Utah, but it isn't said when it will be legalized the same-sex marriage.
