Halloween: the boundary between life and death
Halloween is a festival of Celtic origin which is celebrated on the 31st of October. It dates back to two thousand years ago. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Originally it celebrated the end of the Celtic year and of course the beginning of the new year. When summer ended, the season became darker and colder and they were afraid because with winter the ground died. During this period they also believe that death people come back as spirits, looking for a new body to enter. It marked, therefore, the boundary between life and death. Death is associated with this period because people were afraid of darkness and they predicted the future, to defend themself, through the signs of nature and made sacrifices. According to the catholic religion, on the 1st of November is celebrated the festivity to honor all saint and martyrs. At the beginning Halloween was a religious festival, nowadays it is celebrated just to have fun, indeed it is characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating, people dress up, and hollow out pumpkins to realize lanterns.
