In the present work I am going to analyse the article "Record cold in the USA” from the newspaper “The Economist”. The headline invites the reader to read the article. The headline conveys information and attracts attention using a short phrase. Its function is to present the reader the basic contents of the fact.
It is arranged into three sections.
The introduction contains a summary of the news and responds to rule of five Ws. The article is about the incredible cold and snow storms that hit the United States, particularly New York in recent days.
In the second section the journalist provides additional information; the details are given in order of importance.
In the second section there are information about the cold: the snow have created many problems to transport, communications and life in the city.
The cold is then moved in neighboring Canada. Therefore this record cold has caused damage and deaths.
The third section is about the climate change in the world. The ecology and in particular global warming are much discussed topic in recent times. There are comments, opinions and observations from some experts on the topic.
The experts say that the cause of this problem may be global warming. The abnormal cold may be the result of climate change that have hit the world in the last hundred years. We should be alarmed and we should think, nature is taking revenge for the damage done by man and that we are still doing.
The article shows possible solutions to the problem; this article may be addressed to an average audience because they can all be affected by this problem and many want to deepen it.
The article combines some language features to inform, the writing is clear and concise.
The article is written in 3rd person.
The objective of this article is to inform the reader about very important issues of which we should all be concerned because they relate to our future and that of our children. The reader should be interested to read the article also to find possible solutions to the problem and to find out what each of us can do.
