WHY WAS ALFRED CALL ALFRED “THE GREAT”?

King Alfred was called Alfred the Great because he was the only king who successfully defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, and by the time of his death he had become the dominant ruler in England.

Alfred was the first King of the West Saxons to style himself "King of the Anglo-Saxons".
