Varie interpretazioni possibili della tragedia di Amleto.

Hamlet has many possible interpretations. There is one, which is probably the most common in the Renaissance; it is in line with culture in Shakespeare’s time: the play seen as a revenge tragedy. During Shakespeare’s time, life was conceived in terms of hell and heaven; it was obvious that the tragedy would end in hell. The play has an interplay between good and evil; of course, Hamlet met his father ghost and he understood that evil was his uncle whilegood was in his father: he was the natural king and his uncle has usurped his father place. According to the mentality of the time, Hamlet was asked to revenge his father. The mentality was deeply affected by the Christian attitude, but there would have been something wrong with Hamlet, he often thought of death and his mind was in pain.

In the storyline, the first important event is that Hamlet comes home because of the funeral of his father. Why is the father figure so important for a man? What does it represent for a man? Fathers are figures of what limit represent, natural rule that tells the child a social rule. In Friuli Venezia Giulia la figura materna è molto più forte à fase emigratoria durante e dopo le guerre à donne che devono ricoprire anche I doveri tipici della parte maschile della coppia. In Shakespeare’s time the father is the reference point in the family, he has to look for the family, to assure the family living. If the father, as the case of Hamlet, is also the king he becomes a reference point for the country; he is responsible to keep the country together; if the country loses the king, it loses stability. That country becomes something having no rules and therefore subject to any danger. Therefore, when Hamlet has got the suspicious that his father was murdered by Claudius, he becomes the icon of the evil, so he would like to react and after meeting his father’s ghost such need becomes obsessive.

Starting from his doubts on everything is wrong to Hamlet, nothing seems to fit for him and he starts to show a terrible behaviour: nobody seems to understand him because he has terrible reactions. Everything seems to move from the moment when Hamlet lost his father. Where do doubts appear? Where do they come out? They come from our minds; they become the settings of our doubts. Modern attitude to an old story, Shakespeare communicated it in a dramatic way throughout the play; and the play Hamlet offers the perfect embodiment for a Renaissance spirit. A human being with his weaknesses, fears, doubts and uncertainties become the core of the text. Tragedy in Shakespeare’s play is always the consequence of the flow of the character. What is Hamlet flow? It is his inability to make a decision; if I cannot decide I can’t take the decision I can’t make me act on a way or another. Hamlet’s mind becomes the setting of the scene and we are asked as readers to read Hamlet’s mind, to analyse it’s workings and to try to understand what crosses it; and therefore we feel empathy with him because we recognise ourselves in Hamlet. There is a partial identification.

We should wonder how could Shakespeare recreate Hamlet’s mind on stage? If you want to write a play, if you want to represent a mind you have to find the mean to do this. Shakespeare utilizza il soliloquio, una tecnica che gli permette di sviluppare in forma parlata tutto ciò che passa per la mente dei Amleto. Non si deve confondere con il monologo: sono cose diverse.

What is the difference between a monologue and a soliloquy?

In origin, the words are doublets: Greek monologue and Latin soliloquy both mean 'single speech'. But they are now distinguished in performances with monologue as a speech made by one person in the company of others while a soliloquy is spoken by one person who is alone. A monologue is a long speech delivered by one person who forgets or neglects the others who are there, with an example being "The Vagina Monologues." Hamlet's "To be or not to be" is a great example of a soliloquy. We also think of monologue in the context of late-night talk shows or comedy clubs where the host or performer does a stand-up comedy routine.

Hamlet relationship with his father is the core point of the tragedy. Shakespeare gives to Hamlet’s mother a key position in the play. Amleto pensa che la madre sia complice della realizzazione del delitto, dell’omicidio di suo padre; this explains why Hamlet’s language to her is so strong, to the point of violence.
