"Hamlet" by Agostino Lombardo - Summary
Hamlet was analyzed by Agostino Lombardo as a key figure in the dramatic turning point of the classical world (in the supposed certainties of the Middle Ages) to the doubts and anxieties of modernity.
At the center of the drama is position a tragic hero, a problematic hero, divided and torn by inner conflicts, placed in situations of unresolved tension and conflict.
Unable to bear the weight of evil, offended by his triumph , he finds refuge in melancholy , but not rest. His conscience is the source of many thoughts, speculations about life and death, doubts, intentions. He should obey the father and the laws of honor, but the momentum is prevented by the melancholy thought of the vanity of all, and the will is held back by a thousand considerations. The noble character comes into conflict with the gloomy mood: what the first light, the second turns off. Moralism and sense of duty can not prevail because demand the fulfillment of a murder, hard to implement. No one knows in fact the fault of which is stained against King Claudius of Hamlet's father, and then it would explain an act so vile by the young.
Hamlet comes to know by the ghost of his father the circumstances of his death, while in a state of grief and bitterness.
Everything now is repugnant to the spirit of Hamlet who, disappointed and helpless, generalized, covering pessimism and suspicion of each person. The repulsion for vice and hypocrisy prevailing in the world is repulsed by life itself. But suicide is punishable by religion and a sense of duty takes the shape of the spectrum paternal, which implies before him and then reminds him of the need to have your revenge.
Hamlet is a man who loves and thinks, and that in the meantime, however, does not act, and if it does it does so with wit or per pulse.
There is therefore a real connection between thought and action : it is obvious his state of crisis. He felt called to a task for which it is cut, and yet it has a noble soul that prevents him from denying the company. He has in himself a desire for purity so high that the prospect of an eventual confrontation with the defect , although in order to eliminate it, it seems to difficult to accept. Yet he knows so well that should not be, so do not turn away, but failed to temptation: but in the meantime, see the decisive moment.
After four centuries, Hamlet continues to attract move is because the strength and weakness, impulsivity and calculation, sensitivity and reflection: everything is extreme in him, who by his kindness and his idealism arises on the scene to witness the conflicts and aspirations of every man who has a high conception of existence and in the meantime should experiment with the corruptibility.
Hamlet, the character of the historic covered so many legends, has come down to us to ask to interpret it, to challenge us to a confrontation. With its weakness, doubts, it reflects. Dying, like every hero, leads us to ask once more what ever life is.
