HAMLET
Hamlet is considered one of the Shakespeare's greatest tragedies.
Shakespeare wrote a lot of tragedies because he found ispiration from medioeval materials.
The full title of the story is “The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark”.
The Tragedy is written between 1599 and 1602, it is set in Denmark.
The Tragedy develops on different layer of meaning: the political level, the affections level, the generation level. The language in the play is unrhymed. It is called black verse, a Jambic Pentamether without rhyme.
When the King of Denmark dies, Queen Gertrude remarriages to Claudius. Claudius has ascended the throne because he murdered his brother. Hamlet,the Prince, begins to suspect that his uncle Claudius has murdered his father but he is not sure. The ghost of Hamlet's father appears to him and tells him that Claudius has poisoned him, Hamlet wants to take a revenge. Shakespeare uses the idea of the ghost because our mind creates ghost when it is confused. Hamlet is scared because he cannot control the situation but the idea of his father's ghost gives him torment. In the famous monologue “To be or not to be ” proves to have doubts about his role. In his monologue Hamlet gives voice to the difficult doubts he has in front of life. His question is whether to continue to exist or not, whether to suffer "the slings and arrows of an outrageous fortune" or to decide to fight against pain and problems. So, Hamlet does not know if to die or to continue to live. The question is therefore to live or not to live, to be or not to be. Hamlet has the desire to escape from pain, he takes into consideration the possibility to die.
