Anne Hataway
By Carol Ann Duffy

By the title the read reader wonders why the sonnet may be entitled "Anne Hathaway", the curiosity to sudisfy. The naive reaer may be cusious who Anne Hathaway is. On the contrary the reader knows who she is; he may be curious chy Duff should write a sonnet about Shakespeare's wife.
Considering the layout the structure is a typical model of Shakespeare's sonnet, made up by three quatrains and a rhyming couplet.
The first element is the "dramatic personae". We have to understand that the speaking voice is the one of the dramatic personae namely William Shakespeare's wife's voice and is her voice the reader can hear. The first quatrain in alternative rhyme introduces the sitation (William Shakespeare's and his fife's intimacy). The setting is their bad, the bad they love in, the love bad is introduced in natural expressions: it is a "spinning word", "forests", "castels"; it is metaphorically expressed by "a sea where you die to find pearls". The alternative sound of "w" speeds up the rhytm and it is nteresting to notice she uses the expression "spinning world", the progressive aspect of "to spin" adds speed of the rhytm, at thge same time create an image of what went on in bad. "Forest" give the idea of something not as easy to hand and something fertil.
Ann Duffy describes them love making like something particular and private. It is a very dinamic atmosphear, the bad is "sea where we would dive for pearls", the speaking voice speaks about the bad magnifying it. "Words" are methaporical said to be "shooting stars which feel to earth as kisses", is a simile to compare Shakespeare's words to kisses. Ann Duffy tries to recreate the typical Renaissance contest, Shakespeare's words are still kisses in the mind of the intellingent reader.
