The monologue is from act III scene I.
To tell the thruth we are in front of a soliloquy which is the maximal manifestation of loneliness. In the "Hamlet's monologue" , the audience or the reader has direct access to Hamlet's most private and intimate thoughts.
Shakespear had devide the soliloquy into different parts: the first part sintesizes the problem and it introduces the question of the protagonist. "To be or not to be" , where not to be means simply living on the biological level. This is one of the most well known quotes in the English language.
In his soliloquy, Hamlet gives voice to the difficult doubts he has in front of life, which are the main cause of his mental conflict.
LANGUAGE : in wathever Shakespear tries to convey to his audience, he use a metaphorical language and iperboles to make his point lively and concrete.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the body of the soliloquy He is pondering wether it is better to going on living or to die.
EFFECTS OF GOING ON LIVING:
-He has to bear SLING, ARROWS,HEART-ACHE , A SEA OF TROUBLES (Metaphore which gives the idea of something of big and never ending. IN ORDER TO CONVEY THE IDEA OF the difficulty of life. This markets the audience also imagine pain. This choise underlines Hamlet's inner conflicts. )
All this elements correspond to the evils people have to get throught. This employs possible reaction:
-Hamlet can take arms to face his problems and to fight against them.
-He has to suffer phisically and emotionally.
Hamlet considers also the possibility to die by committing suicide.
It would be like in a sleep. When we sleep we apparently forget problems
On a second thought Hamlet think that ---> THERE'S A RUB:
When we sleep we may have dreams which can also turn into nightmares.
"WHAT DREAMS MAY COME?" How can Hamlet shuffled of troubles? What is the right choice?
Man suffers because he cannot have an answer to this question. In front of fear he is stuck because he doesn't know the consequences of what he do.
Hamlet develops the preavious consideration trying to think in a more detail way and making a list of the DISADVANTAGES OF LIFE:
-time, oppressors, pain for unreturned love, slowness of law, insolence of office (synecdoche)-Contempt of merit.
This is a list of evils which gives an example of the difficulty of life.
Hamlet could put an end of these suffers killing himself.
He is weary of life but at the same time he wants to find out what makes men tied to life. Although a man is weary of life, to kill himself is very difficult for him because he is scared about the unknown afterlife. Since we are scared our will is stuck and weak by the ignorance. This weak will makes a man bear the evils of life.
--> This is Hamlet's great answer. In fact human being are not ready to put themself to the test.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thus when a man thinks too much he becomes weak , and therefore he doesn't act because he is stuck by the knowledge of ignorance, which makes him coward.
