The Stuart was the first king of the United Kingdom.

The Stuart dynasty reigned in England and Scotland from 1603 to 1714 and it was a period of saw flourishing Court culture but there also was instability.

For example Scotland was catholic and there were differences in culture. It was an age of intense religious debates radical about religion and politics.

James I believed in the Divine Right of Kings or rather absolutism; he thought that power could only come from God.

He had to face religious problems and opponents from Parliament.

Both contributed to a bloody civil war in the mid-seventeenth century between Crown and Parliament.

  • Middle class supported parliament. The parliament led by Oliver Cromwell.
  • Cromwell was supported by common people, lord and the gentry and officials of the Church of England.

Why a serf was accord with the king?

Because in England since the Middle Ages there was serfdom.

During the Civil War Oliver Cromwell, the representative of the parliament, formed a new model army, called “the Ironsides”.

The struggle ended with the victory for Oliver Cromwell and the execution of King Charles I.

Oliver Cromwell took power and England became a republic it was called Commonwealth.

In this period the people lived a different moment and there was the flourishing of a new king of literally “comedy”.

After the death of Cromwell there was the restoration of the crown, which was soon followed with the “Glorious revolution”.

It is a very important point. When the king came back, which is also called “blooded revolution” William and Mary d’Orange was called from Parliament to became king of England. They had to draw up the act of Settlement man of 1701. Only protestant could have a public work.

The next in line was George Hanover.
