In considering the title, the intelligent reader understand that this poem is about a girl who lives in unknown place. Moreover he may be curious and he should wonder some questions: why she lives among the untrodden ways? And why the poet wrote about someone that live among untrodden ways?
The text, in considering the layout, is divides in three stanzas of four lines (quatrains); it is a ballad. This poem is organised mostly in alternate rhime.
In the first stanza there is a speaking voice who says that a lady lived in a distant place: it was near the springs of Dove (a river in Scotland) and this Maid was not praise because nobody knew it.
The function of the first quatrain is to introduce the girl, where she lives, and to introduce her from a external point of view.
In the second quatrain the peot compares the girl to a violet who live among stones hidden by the mossy and as a consequence you could hardly see her. In the same stanza the speaking voice gives a judgement and tells the reader that she was very nice looking and that she remainded a star. The poet gives additional information: he says that her beauty was similar to the beauty of a star when only one was shining in the sky. This means she was preciaus.
The second stanza developes Lucy's personality. Its function is to give reader a very positive idea of the girl through the exprection of her personality, of her strong point that made of her a rare creature.
In the thrird stanza the speaking voice tells the reader that very few people knew her and therefor only a few people had the opportunity to meet her. It follows that when Lucy (this is the name of the girl) die and now she is burried in her grave, this makes a great difference for the poet.
In the thrird quatrain the intelligent reader understand the spaeking voice have a very positive opinion about Lucy and he misses her because he can feel the difference now because he's no longer there. Inded it is about the relationship between the speaking voice and the girl.
The poet, examining the title, uses arcaic forme of english language for a word; inded 'dwelt' is the arcaic forme for 'live'.
The poet uses a run-on-line between the first and the second line, and this speeds the reading; but the use of determinate words at the end of all lines, like ways and praise, Dove and love, forms an assonance that create an echo effect that slows the poem.
The first quatrain ends with a colon that is useful to drow the readers attention.
In the first line of the second stanza the poet gives a judgement using a metaphor (a violet) to saying that the girl is shy, reserved, little; and in the thrird line of the same stanza compares the girl to a star utilizing a simile that is used exactly to better describe.
The word 'one' at the end of the line makes stronger the girl's uniqueness.
In the last stanza the words 'unknown' and 'know' or 'Lucy' and 'ceassed' arre example of alliteration.
The poet with this work wanted to let the readers understand that in the world there are people who seem insignificant or are not known by many people, but actually have much to give and are very interesting. Therefor we do not judge by appearances.
