  1. The miller ground the corn to make flour. I think a miller was not an important figure in a medieval community.
  2. Build: chap of sixteen stone, great stout fellow big in brawn and bone.

Beard: like any sow or fox was red.

Nose: it displayed a wart on which there stood a tuft of hair.

The miller is characterized by the narrator as a weighty and sturdy man. His abilities are communicated by his strength. He occupies in stupid actions that don’t make him an intelligent man. His occupation and his physical appearance underline his love for food. His physical appearance is compared to an animal’s one. He has a beard red like a sow or fox and his hair is red as the bristles in an old sow’s ears.

  1. He was good at his job. Indeed, he was a “master-hand” at stealing grain.
