The extract belongs to book "Paradise Lost" by Milton. It takes place in the Universe: Heaven, Hell and the Heart and it is about Satan's ribellion against God. The narrator correspons with him and the reason for his downfall is that he thought himself equal to god, and he wanted to role , even if he was aware of god's superiority. Satan embodies milton's puritan ideals of indipendence since he is seen as a rebel fighting against the absolute power. He is a philosophical hero because he embodies  also the weakness of the human being , who is carred away by his emotions. He didn't accept his position, but he cannot change it, in line with the mentality of the time, and he didn't accept his limits. Now he is  a "lost archangel", he has lost Paradise and wherever he looks at he understand that the choiche he makes was wrong. The interrogative form at the beginning of the test underlines satan's shock, he is not glad to be there because everything is different from Paradise, the atmosphere is gloomy and dark, but on a second thought he realizes that he is the new sovereign of that place and he says that it is " better to reign in hell than serve in Heaven". He is so tied up in his pride that he won't give it up, even if it means eternal damnation. However, Satan is aware of his inferiority to God and he never puts the Almighty nature of God in discussion.
The language used by Milton appeals to the language of senses and at the beginning it presentes an anaphorical structure.
