A VALEDICTION FORBIDDING MOURNING

The text I am going to analize is a song by John Donne. He uses a ner text style, which goes under the name of song.

The speaking voice invites his lover not to morn. The reason of this sadness is that they have to be away from each other for a long time. As well as when virtuos men die, they should separate without a lot of pain. When two lovers are together, they do not need to be always near. Donne uses the phrase “so let us melt”, which is a chimical terminology. The use of words from science or law is a tipical feature of metaphysical poetry.

He uses cosmology to symbolize perfection.

Donne calls “sublunary lovers” men, he says that people think that love can not exist with separation, because it removes the love itself. Indeed they need physical contact to love someone, they need “eyes, lips, and hands.”

They souls are unites, so separation is meant as an expansion of the soul. He believes that two lovers are like two feets of a compass. The woman is in the middle, and the man wherever he goes he will return in the middle, to the woman.

In conclusion two lovers do not have to worry about separation, because they will always end together.
