SATAN'S SPEECH
The text I am going to analyze is an extract from John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost.
The extract consists in the moment when Satan arrives in Hell, after he was send by God.
He is called “the lost archangel” because he has revolted against God and now he is punished with Hell.
When he arrives, he quickly realizes how different Hell is from heaven. It is darker, hotter and gloomy. He talks with questions because he is questioning himself, looking to the new place. He is suprised, because he comes from a completely different place.
Paradise is bright, sunny, with a good climate. He feels lost, but he likes to be in hell. Indeed he knows that he is equal to God in reason, but Gos is stronger in force. Satan prefers hell where he is free to Paradise. He is able to make heaven out of hell.
Satan's goal is to corrupt God's creation: man. His first revenge is to corrupt Eve in the form of a snake.
Satan finishes with the famous phrase: “Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven”.
