The text I am going to analyze is an extract from the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. This extract is taken from Act II, Scene II of the Tragedy.
At the beginning of the scene Romeo is under Juliet's balcony, and he starts a soliloquy. During the soliloquy appares Juliet.
Romeo uses a lot of metaphor to describe her. He compares her to the sun, because as the sun is in the center of the universe, Juliet is in the center of Romeo's universe. He compares her also to an angel and to a bringer of light, and her eyes to stars.
Juliet instead is more concrete, and she is worried about the conflict between her family, and Romeo's family.
In this text Romeo is linked to the Medioeval vision, while Juliet, that is more pragmatic than Romeo, has a modern view. She is also more direct.
At the end of the tragedy, Juliet sayes that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. The phrase means that she loves him and their name isn't as important as their feeling.
