The Romans

The Anglo-Saxon

Period: They gradually settled throughout the British Isles during the Iron Age(600 B.C-50 A.D)

Period: They invaded Britain between the 43-47 A.D under Emperor Claudius

Period:  After The withdrawal of the Romans in 410 A.D. the Anglo-Saxon take control of the Britain

Main Characteristics: The Celts were tribes of warriors who shared a similar language, religion and culture; according to Romans they were barbarians

Main Characteristics: The Romans involved the conquered tribes in the administration of the province. They also turned the conquered towns into centres of commercial activity  

Main Characteristics: The Angle-Saxon were formed by three different population: The Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. They exalted physical courage and personal freedom and they also had a highly developed sense of beauty

Contribution: They brought ironworking to the British Isles and they probably built hill-forts to defend themselves

Contribution: They built walls all around the towns, streets and defensive construction (like the Hadrain’s Wall)

Contribution: They made fine ornaments  

Occupation: The Celts , besides being good warriors, they were good farmers too. They cultivated the soil

Occupation: The Romans were good conquerors  and architects

Occupation: They were farmers looking for richer lands and also fishermen used to hunting dìseals and whales in the ocean

Social Organization: The Celts basic unit was the clan, that bound together  form tribes

Social Organization: The Roman social organization were divided into: Emperor, nobles and citizens  

Social Organization: They were organized in family groups called clans in which the most important social bond was loyalty

Living Place: They lived in huts made of timber with thatched roofs

Living Place: They lived into town that had public baths, walls and streets

Role of Women: The women were almost equal to men, they could fight in war and they could also choose the man they wanted

Role of Women: Women weren’t equal to men, They couldn’t take part of the politician life and they couldn’t be warriors

Role of Women:

Religion: They worshipped the natural elements

Religion: Firstly they were pagans and they worshipped different Gods, but then they became Christians

Religion: At the end of the 6th century they became Christians after Augustine went to Canterbury to develop Christianity

Literature: They relied on the oral transmission of culture through bards.

Literature: They transmitted culture through the Druids, a special unite that do not to war, their role were to write and to transmit tales, poems and culture

Literature: They transmitted culture through poems that deals with legends and real historical events
