Analyzes the third and the fourth section of Beowulf's extract.
The third section describes the fight between Grendel the monster and Beowulf's warriors.
The section starts with: “Time and again”,these words express the length of the fight, the reader can understand that the fight was long and hard.Even if warriors had blades and weapon they couldn't defeat Grendel(no blade on earth...weapon,line 32-36).The way the narrator describes warriors' weakness compared to the monster point up the strength and invincibility of Grendel who is a god- cursed.Despite Grendel is stronger than Beowulf's warriors they fight with courage and loyalty to their lord: this is clear at line 29-31 “Stalwart in action,they kept striking out on every side,seeking to cut straight to the soul”.The alliteration “warriors worked” underline the courage and the devotion with warriors fight the monster.With the expression “straight to the soul the narrator wants to focus the attention on the demonic nature of the monster:only cutting him straight to the soul warriors could win and defeat god-cursed Grendel.The use of many war words suggests the greatness and the violence of the fight.In this section Grendel appears like an extraordinary creature who can't be defeated expect by a hero.By this section readers understand the importance of the military aspect of Anglosaxon culture and some religion aspects like the opposition between evil and good.
Coming now to the fourth section the reader can understand how the fight is ended.The narrator in this section tells the end of the fight and who is the winner and the loser.The incipit tells that “the monster was in pain”,the narrator describes whathappened to the monster(a tremendous wound appared on his shoulder.Sinews split and the bone-lappings burst,line 38-40).In the same section the narrator exalts Beowulf's win.Only in the last part of the section readers discover what is the end of Grendel and where he come from:”Grendel died and he was driven to his desolate lair”.The section is composed by two part:the lost and the win as in the previous section the narrator focus the attention on the opposition of two power: evil and good.In addition alliterative sound of 's' and 'r' point up the pain and the weakness of the monster.Even if Grendel was describe previouslsy as a extraordinary and invincible creature it is defeated by a man but not a mere man but by an extraordinary men an hero: Beowulf.
