Mrs Dalloway
The text is the incipit of “Mrs Dalloway”, written by Virgina Woolf and published in the 1925. It is set in London and the story is about Clarissa Dalloway, who wants to organize a party. The story takes place in one day of the 1923 from the morning, when Clarissa goes to buy some flowers for the party to the evening, when she hears of one of his friend’s death . the title underlines the woman’s status, the reader can know she’s married. Reading the first sentence the reader has the feeling to hear what she says. In fact nothing happens, what matters is what's on the mind of Mrs. Dalloway. The reader can see a glimpse of his life, he understands that since she was 18 years old until now she remained in contact with one person, Peter Walsh. The reader can understand she's a rich lady because she has a servant. In the text the narrator seem to be disappeared but he is still there. There are very short connections (for example for) that seem imperceptible but which reveal the presence of the narrator. The reader receives all the thoughts that go through Mrs Dalloway’s head. The narrator speaks as if he were into her head. Everything that the reader read through the interior monologue allows him to get into the head of Mrs. Dalloway. Virginia Woolf uses a style reminiscent of poetic style. The rhythm of her prose recalls the rhythm of poetry. The narrator makes us understand how Mrs. Dalloway felt at 18 years old.
