It tells about two girls, Nellie March and Jill Banford, who had taken a farm together, intending to work it all by themselves.

The place is isolated by the world, so there is not someone else with them, they are free from any sort of male authority and they defend their independence.

One day, things at the farm began to go wrong: a fox appeared and ate all the fowls, so Nellie, who is "the man of the house", decided to go out every night and to hunt the fox but, when she found herself in front of the animal, she didn't fired because she was petrified by.

Therefore, a man called Henry come to the farmhouse in search of home.

Banford allowed him to stay with them for some days but March losed her heart to him, and Henry asked her to marry.

She was undecided: who should she choose? Jill or Henry?

Banford found it hard to let March go, so she tried in every way to convince March to stay at the farm with her. At the end, Nellie chose to stay with Jill and she communicated her decision to Henry with a letter (He must come back to base camp because He was a solider).

When he read the letter, he wanted an explanation so he asked to his commander to let him free 24 hours and next he took his bicycle and ran to Nellie and Jill's house.

When he arrived, he found Nellie, Jill and her parents concentrated on cut down a tree, so he offered to take down the tree.

Nobody was seeing the tree when it fell down, so nobody saw Jill when the tree was going to kill her.

Now, Henry could have married Nellie, and no one would have stopped him.
