BANFORD
In the present text I'm going to discuss Banford's characterization. She has been described by the writer like the opposite of March.Banford and March are two characters of D.H. Lawrence's short story 'The Fox'.
To start my argumentation I would focus the attention on writer's choice of the two names.
Banford's name reminds the verb 'to band' or 'to bind' both the verbs suggest the idea of somebody who needs to be connected. In fact Banford always asks March's opinion and tries to convince her to do what she wants.
Exactly on the other side we have March, her name reminds the month and the verb 'to march' both these possibilities remind the idea of somebody who is strong and active. In fact she is described like the man of the house.
In addition to that their nature are described one like the opposite of the other.
Banford is described like a simple and innocent girl who likes gossip and does all the inside works at the farm but during the story she reveals herself: in truth she is a mean and spiteful woman. In fact she tries in all ways to convince March to rest at the farm.
In opposition we have March who is described like a robust and strong young woman, she learned carpentry and joinery. She does all the outside works, she is the man of the house.Even if she would be trated like the strongest of the two women in truth she is a very insecure woman, she doesn't know what to do about Henry and she allows other people make decisions for her.
Even if Banford dieds at the end she is the strongest one between the two women because she can convince March to stay at the farm and she doesn't fall in love with the misterious Henry.
I think the write made this decision to make the reader understand that nothing is like it looks.
