Banford is one of the protagonists of the short story “The Fox” by D.H.Lawrence.
She is characterized to be exactly the opposite of her friend March. The main categories thorough which the writer creates the description of Banford are: her name, her physical appearance and her behavior.
First of all the writer resorts to the choice of the name, which reminds the verbs “to band” and “to bend”. The first one, which means “riunire” refers to the relationship between her and March: they are real close. The second name, which means “sottomettere”, refers to Banford, who wants to bend March to herself; Banford is a strong character and she conditions March, for example she can almost convince her not to marry Henry.
Regarding physical appearance the narrator characterized Banford like a weak woman. She is thin and frail, physically weak woman. She is the woman in the house. In fact she likes cooking, gossiping, that are some typical woman activities, while Banford privileges out door works.
Another category to analize this character is Banford’s behavior. At the beginning, when Henry arrives at Bailey Farm, she is available and polite; she sees him like a little brother. But when she starts realize that Hanry is going to propose March, she become jealous. She wants March to stay there. So Banford, apparently frail and weak, is the strongest of the two women. She always know what she want: she loves March and she will do everything she can to prevent Henry, but this is why she will die at the end of the story, killed by Henry.
